What Do You Do When Your Parents Want Cheesy Songs Played at Your Wedding?

By DJ Justin Warwick from DJ Enterprises Mobile Disc Jockey & Photo Booth

Firstly, it’s important to understand that your wedding is a special day for both you and your parents, and they may have certain expectations or desires for the music that will be played. While you may not want cheesy songs at your wedding. It’s important to approach the conversation with your parents with respect and understanding. This comes up more often than not when I’m talking to couples about music choices and the vibe they are trying to create. They will say something like: “My mom wants her cheesy songs played for dancing, but don’t play them.” And sure enough, when the dance floor is packed, mom beelines straight for me and says “Love Shack!!” and walks away. When mom puts me on the spot, I have no option but to play it.

One approach could be to have an open and honest conversation with your parents about your preferences for music at your wedding. While also taking into consideration their requests. I would suggest a compromise, such as playing a few cheesy songs during a dedicated time period. Or choosing a few songs that have sentimental value to your parents and incorporating them into the playlist. Take a listen to the songs they suggest, and let them know the tracks you will compromise on.

Work with your DJ on a Playlist

Another option could be to hire a DJ that specializes in a wide variety of music genres, and work with them to create a playlist that incorporates both your preferences and your parents’ requests. This can help ensure that everyone at the wedding has a good time and enjoys the music. Ultimately, it’s important to find a solution that both respects your wishes and honors your parents’ desires. Remember that your wedding day is about celebrating your love and commitment to your partner. The music should reflect your personalities and relationship, while including your family and friends likes.
