Planning the Perfect Multicultural Wedding

Planning a multicultural wedding can be both exciting and challenging. It offers an opportunity to celebrate diverse cultures and bring families and friends together in a unique and meaningful way. Here are some tips for planning the perfect multicultural wedding:

Find a common theme

Find a common theme that can unite different cultural traditions. For example, you could choose a color scheme that is meaningful to both cultures or incorporate a common symbol or tradition into the ceremony.

Involve both families

Involve both families in the wedding planning process. This can help ensure that everyone feels included and valued, and can also help to bridge cultural differences.

Incorporate cultural traditions

Incorporate traditions from both cultures into the ceremony and reception. This can include customs such as the exchange of wedding garlands in Indian weddings or the breaking of the glass in Jewish weddings. The “Baraat” is a custom of an Indian wedding, it involves a parade with the groom, his family and friends, non-stop music, dancing and lots of cheering. And who doesn’t want their own parade?

Consider food options

Food is an important part of any wedding, and in a multicultural wedding, it can be an opportunity to showcase different cuisines. Consider offering a diverse menu that includes traditional dishes from both cultures. A Japanese American wedding is one of my favorites, plus I’m a sucker for Susi!

Hire a bilingual wedding officiant

Hire a bilingual wedding officiant who can perform the ceremony in both languages. This can help ensure that everyone understands the ceremony and feels included. I have DJed several weddings that included two officiates, one for each language and traditions.

Offer translation services:

If many of your guests speak different languages, consider offering translation services for the ceremony and reception. This can be done through live interpreters or through the use of technology such as translation apps.

Choose music that reflects both cultures:

Choose music that reflects both cultures and that will get everyone dancing. Consider hiring a DJ that will play a variety of music from different cultures. Work closely with them to make sure your music is a good representation of you and your guests and doesn’t lean too heavy to one side or the other.

Planning the perfect multicultural wedding involves finding a common theme, involving both families, incorporating cultural traditions, considering food options, hiring a bilingual wedding officiant, offering translation services, and choosing music that reflects both cultures. With these tips in mind, you can plan a beautiful and meaningful wedding that celebrates diversity and brings people together in a unique and memorable way.
