By DJ Justin Warwick from DJ Enterprises Mobile Disc Jockey & Photo Booth

Welcome to the serene shores of Monterey CA. Or as I call them “Bliss” where the gentle waves dance to the rhythm of love and the sun kisses the horizon with warmth. Your Monterey beach wedding is not just a celebration; it’s a journey into a realm of enchantment. As you prepare to say “I do” against the backdrop of the ocean’s melody, let me guide you through the perfect playlist to accompany your cocktail hour and dinner, infusing your special day with the soothing sounds of Hawaiian music. Whether you are planning to have a complete Island theme event, or just add a few selections for an added tropical touch. I’m sure you will find a song that’s the perfect fit for your style.

For centuries, the islands of Hawaii have been a source of musical inspiration, blending traditional melodies with contemporary rhythms to create a sound that is as timeless as it is enchanting. From the golden voice of Alfred Aholo Apaka to the soul-stirring tunes of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, Hawaiian music has the power to transport you to a place of tranquility and romance.

Hawaiian Island Life

As a teenager I moved to the Island of Oahu, Hawaii where I first started working in the entertainment industry. My first Island gig, I was as a mascot for a popular dance club, Moose McGillycuddy’s. Yep, I dressed up in a seven-foot-tall Moose costume and walked up and down Waikiki Beach inviting tourists to the club. Fun for a minute, but it got pretty hot in there. On the plus side, that landed me a job on the 98 Rock N’ Roll Party Cruise Ship, my first introduction to what being a DJ was all about. I was hooked. Not just on the idea of being a DJ, but being a party host playing great music, Island music mixed with Top 40. Yeah it worked. Now you know how this mixture came about.

As you sip cocktails with your loved ones and savor delectable dishes infused with island flavors, let the music weave its magic around you. Here’s my DJ’s guide to curating the perfect playlist, drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of Hawaiian musical history. If you’re planning a Hawaiian beach themed party, and not a wedding, these tunes will work just as well.

Alfred Aholo Apaka

Begin your evening with the velvety tones of Alfred Aholo Apaka, often referred to as the “Golden Voice of Hawaii.” His classic renditions of Hawaiian standards such as “Lovely Hula Hands” and “Blue Hawaii” evoke the elegance and charm of a bygone era, setting a romantic tone for your cocktail hour. I remember the first time going into the local record store (it’s a store people would go to buy music) in Waikiki and hearing Alfred Apaka. I had heard a lot of what I thought was Hawaiian music, but after hearing Apaka it opened up my musical horizons.

Arthur Lyman

Infuse a touch of exoticism into your soirée with the lush sounds of Arthur Lyman’s vibraphone. Known for his innovative approach to traditional Hawaiian music. Lyman’s compositions, such as “Taboo” and “Yellow Bird,” add a dash of intrigue and sophistication to your beachside celebration. I love the sounds of Arthur Lyman, he’s a mix of traditional Island sound and Pink Floyd. A very chill vibe!

Duke Kamoku

Pay homage to Hawaiian heritage with the soulful melodies of Duke Kamoku and his ukulele. His heartfelt performances of songs like “Hawaiian Wedding Song” and “Aloha Oe” capture the essence of love and aloha, creating an atmosphere of joy and nostalgia. If you’ve ever been to a real Hawaiian Luau, then you’ve heard Duke Kamoku’s music.

Don Ho

As the sun begins to set and the evening unfolds. Let the infectious energy of Don Ho’s music sweep you off your feet. I was lucky enough to see Don perform many times at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki before I moved back to California. With his charismatic stage presence and lively tunes such as “Tiny Bubbles” and “Pearly Shells,” Ho brings a sense of festivity and merriment to your beach party or wedding celebration.

Israel Kamakawiwo’ole

No Hawaiian playlist would be complete without the iconic voice of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, affectionately known as “IZ.” His hauntingly beautiful rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World” is sure to be a highlight of your dinner music. Inspiring moments of reflection and gratitude. Israel was discovered when he walked into a tourist recording studio right down the street from my apartment and laid down his first track. I’m not kidding, I walked by that studio every day on my way to work and the beach. I always thought it was a place for suckers to throw away their hard earned dollars, I was clearly wrong.

Kalama Brothers

Transport your guests to the heart of the islands with the soulful harmonies of the Kalama Brothers. Their contemporary take on Hawaiian music, as heard in songs like “Take Me Home, Country Roads (Hawaiian Style).” Infuses your evening with warmth and authenticity, creating memories to last a lifetime. It’s a must on any Island playlist.

Kapono Beamer & Mac Prindy

Close out the evening with the enchanting melodies of Kapono Beamer and Mac Prindy. Their collaborative efforts, such as “Island Style” and “Honolulu City Lights.” Embody the spirit of aloha, inviting you to dance beneath the stars and revel in the magic of love.

Finally, as you embark on this journey together. May the music of Hawaii serenade you with its timeless melodies. And remind you of the boundless beauty that surrounds you. Cheers to love, laughter, and happily ever after amidst the island vibes of your Monterey beach wedding.
