How to Write a Great Wedding Toast

By DJ Justin Warwick from DJ Enterprises Mobile Disc Jockey & Photo Booth

A wedding speech or toast is an opportunity to share your love and support for the newlyweds on their special day. However, for many people, the thought of giving a speech in front of a large audience can be daunting. As a wedding DJ for over thirty years it’s no surprise I have been asked for advice on this subject thousands of times. What does surprise me however is the fact people more often than not wait until the day of the event to ask for advice.

Here are some tips on how to write a great wedding speech and toast that will leave a lasting impression.

Start with an introduction

Begin your speech by introducing yourself and your relationship to the couple. Share a brief anecdote or memory that demonstrates the strength of your relationship and your admiration for the couple.

Keep it brief

A wedding toast should not be too long, as guests will quickly lose interest. Keep your speech to no more than five minutes and stick to the main points.

Be sincere

Speak from the heart and share your genuine feelings and emotions. Tell the couple how much they mean to you and how happy you are to be a part of their special day.

Tell a story

A personal story or anecdote is a great way to engage the audience and connect with the couple. Choose a story that highlights the couple’s unique qualities or demonstrates the depth of your relationship.

Offer advice or wisdom

A wedding toast is an opportunity to offer advice or wisdom to the couple. Share a piece of advice that has helped you in your own relationships or offer some words of encouragement for the couple’s future.

Practice, practice, practice

Once you have written your speech, practice delivering it out loud. Practice in front of a mirror or with a friend, and be sure to time yourself to ensure that your speech is not too long.

Be confident

Remember that you have been chosen to speak at the wedding because the couple values your relationship and your support. Be confident in your ability to deliver a great speech and toast, and remember to speak slowly and clearly. And most importantly, limit the amount of alcohol you consume before your speech, you want your audience to respect the decision the couple has made in choosing you to represent them on their special day.

In conclusion, a great wedding speech and toast is a chance to share your love and support for the newlyweds on their special day. By following these tips, you can create a speech that is engaging, heartfelt, and memorable. So, take the time to write a great speech, practice delivering it, and be confident in your ability to share your love and support with the happy couple. I hope this helps!
