Weekday Wonder: The Rise of Midweek Destination Weddings in Monterey and Carmel California

In the serene coastal haven of Monterey and Carmel, a new trend is sweeping the wedding scene, and it’s all about the magic of midweek celebrations. As couples across the globe grappled with the uncertainties of rescheduling their nuptials in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, a remarkable shift occurred. Suddenly, the allure of weekday weddings became undeniable, offering a fresh perspective on love, commitment, and celebration.

“I saw a huge uptick in weekday weddings in 2022 when the great wedding rush, post-Covid restrictions, was happening,” DJ Justin Warwick, owner of, DJ Enterprises Mobile Disc Jockey, “I have witnessed a remarkable transformation, noting a staggering tenfold increase in weekday bookings from Monday to Thursday in the area”. And while the post-pandemic rush has waned to some degree, some couples are still choosing to host their nuptials during the week. What could be driving this newfound fascination with midweek matrimony, particularly in the enchanting backdrop of Monterey and Carmel?

The Midweek Movement: A Shift in Perspective

Amidst the chaos and upheaval of recent times, couples have begun to embrace the beauty of unconventional wedding dates. Yes, these days it seems change is the new normal, and people are adjusting well to today’s new world. Here are some compelling reasons why a midweek wedding might just be the perfect choice for you:

Availability Abounds: With weekends traditionally monopolized by wedding events, weekdays offer a treasure trove of untapped dates. Most wedding venues and vendors fill their booking calendars years in advance for the most popular wedding dates. Say goodbye to the agony of competing for coveted venues and vendors; a midweek affair opens doors to a wider selection of options, ensuring your dream wedding becomes a reality.

Intimate Affairs: In an era marked by the rise of micro weddings, midweek celebrations naturally lend themselves to a more intimate gathering. Bid adieu to the pressures of hosting a large-scale event and revel in the joy of sharing your special day with a select group of cherished loved ones. Just recently I was the DJ for a Thursday micro wedding at a private estate in Big Sur California with only 16 people in attendance. It was the smallest event I have ever worked, but certainly one of the most special and romantic weddings I have ever witnessed.  And they were no stranger to the dance floor either!

Unparalleled Serenity: Picture exchanging vows amidst the tranquil splendor of Monterey’s rugged coastline or amid the quaint charm of Carmel’s cobblestone streets. Weekday weddings offer a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of weekend crowds, allowing you to savor every precious moment in sublime seclusion.

Pros and Cons: Navigating the Midweek Maze

Of course, like any wedding trend, midweek celebrations come with their own set of pros and cons:

Pros:

– Greater availability of venues, vendors, and accommodations. I haven’t had a single couple yet till me they couldn’t find a Wednesday that all of their vendors of choice were available.

– Potential cost savings on venue rentals and services. Let’s face it, saving money on a onetime event might be one of the smartest choices you ever make.

– Intimate ambiance conducive to heartfelt connections and meaningful moments. It’s true, there’s a totally different feel to the Monterey, Carmel area midweek. Less hustle & bustle, and a whole lot more time to enjoy your surroundings.

– Flexibility in scheduling for both couples and guests. I know, this could be listed under both pros and cons, but I think it really leans towards pro. Finding a date on a weekday everyone is available to attend is a lot easier than the first Saturday in June, don’t you think?

– Opportunity to stand out with a unique and memorable wedding date. And I’m not just talking about shooting for April 20th whenever it may land. Maybe the day you met falls on a Monday next year?

Cons:

– Potential inconvenience for guests who need to take time off work. If you’re planning a micro wedding, this might not be as hard think, but consider adjusting your wedding date to accommodate your must attend wedding guests.

– Limited availability for out-of-town guests due to weekday travel constraints. Unfortunately, not all airlines have midweek flights to the Monterey Airport, but the San Jose Airport is only two hours away.

– Potential scheduling conflicts for key vendors and wedding party members.

– Reduced guest attendance compared to weekend weddings. Again, this one could go both ways as well. Planning a midweek wedding alleviates the pressure of inviting everyone you have ever known to your wedding, and keeping it on the smaller side.
