Planning the Perfect LGBTQ Wedding
Planning a wedding can be an exciting and challenging experience for anyone, but for LGBTQ couples, there may be some additional considerations to take into account. Here are some tips for planning the perfect LGBTQ wedding, or creating an LGBTQ-friendly inviroment for your queer, gay and lesbian guests.
Choose an LGBTQ-friendly wedding vendor
It is important to select vendors who are supportive and inclusive of LGBTQ+ couples. Look for vendors who have experience working with same-sex couples, and who have positive reviews from other LGBTQ+ clients. Most importantly, don’t just rely on communicating through text and email, get your prospective vendors on the phone, or meet with them in person to get the true tone of their personality.
Find a venue that is welcoming
Choose a venue that has a reputation for being inclusive, LGBTQ-friendly, and welcoming to all couples. This can include LGBTQ-owned or operated venues, or venues that have a history of hosting LGBTQ events.
Create a guest list you are comfortable with
It’s completely up to you who gets invited to your wedding. I know this is a big one that most people will try to avoid, but trust me, if there is someone you don’t want at your wedding, or you don’t think they can handle it. DON’T invite them! Even if it’s a parent or grandparent. They will eventually get over it, or not, it doesn’t matter, it’s your life to live and there is no place for someone’s unwanted drama at your wedding celebration.
Incorporate LGBTQ symbols and traditions
Incorporate symbols and traditions that are important to you as an LGBTQ couple. This can include rainbow decorations and photo booth props, same-sex wedding cake toppers, or a rainbow flag in the background of your photos. More than once I have created a rainbow across an entire wall with Up-Lighting, it’s a beautiful thing.
Use gender-neutral language
Instead of using terms like “bride and groom,” use more inclusive language like “partners”, “couple” or “Newlyweds.” Have your DJ use language while addressing your guests like, “Friends and Family” instead of “Ladies and Gentleman” for instance. This shows that you are acknowledging and respecting all types of relationships.
Consider attire options
Traditional gender roles may not apply to your wedding, so consider attire options that reflect your personal style and comfort. This can include suits or dresses, or a combination of both.
Involve your LGBTQ-friendly community
Surround yourself with a community of supportive friends and family who will celebrate your wedding with you. Consider having LGBTQ friends or allies stand up as part of your wedding party.
Celebrate your unique love story
Your wedding is an opportunity to celebrate your unique love story. Consider including personal touches that reflect your relationship, such as a slideshow of photos or a special musical performance.
In conclusion, planning the perfect LGBTQ wedding involves finding supportive vendors, selecting an inclusive venue, creating a comfortable guest list, incorporating LGBTQ symbols, anthems and traditions, using gender-neutral language, considering attire options, involving your community, and celebrating your unique love story. With these tips in mind, you can plan a beautiful and meaningful wedding that reflects your love and commitment to each other.
